Ever since hearing about the MyIntent Project, I’ve loved the idea of thinking of a single word to describe me — or should I say, an *intent* — for the moment, season, or year. I’ve spent the best few weeks thinking about what word or phrase I wanted to run with this year ++ for the longest time, I was stuck — tons of words floating through my mind.

As many of you guys know, I’m [currently!] at a yoga retreat. During a guided meditation on this retreat, the word finally came to be: Courage. ++ freaky enough, that same day, I opened up a new book ++ the first chapter was titled… Courage. You can’t make this ish up.

I want to have courage.
Courage to say yes.
Courage to say no.
Courage to play.
Courage to create.
Courage to draw.
Courage to not judge myself.
Courage to be silly.
Courage to challenge myself.
Courage to say hi first.
Courage to hug first.
Courage to say sorry first.
Courage to love big.
Courage to be vulnerable.
Courage to say what’s on my mind.
Courage to get out of my own head.
Courage to stop making excuses.
Courage to change.
Courage to take risks.
Courage to slow down.
Courage to commit.
Courage to lead.
Courage to follow.
Courage to trust.
Courage to accept.
Courage to dance.
Courage to listen.
Courage to ask.
Courage to love myself.
Courage to believe that I am enough.
Courage to be who I am.
Courage to be.

It seems so easy, right? Just be. But we all play narratives in our heads of who we should be + what others think of us. I read this quote [in the same book I mentioned above — it’s called Big Magic]:

“We all spend our 20s + 30s trying so hard to be perfect, because we’re so worried about what people will think of us. Then we get into our 40s + 50s + we finally start to be free, because we decide that we don’t give a damn what anyone thinks of us. But you won’t be completely free until you reach your 60s or 70s, when you finally realize this liberating truth: nobody was every thinking about you, anyhow.”

I’m 26. I don’t want to wait until I’m 60 or 70 to be completely free — who knows, I might not even make it that long. I want to be free now.
